“Love”
[INTRO]
Hi! My name is Catherine Petru, but you can call me Cat, and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.
[TODAY’S WORD]
Today’s word is “love.” Can you say it with me? Let’s sound it out! Love.
What do you think love means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word love?
[DISCUSSION]
Love is one of those words that is so big. Sometimes we’re taught about love. Sometimes we can feel it. Sometimes we fear we will never feel it. I am no expert, but I think love has to do with deep care and connection.
Let’s explore more by listening to how two Black teachers and writers talk about love.
bell hooks, a late, beloved, feminist teacher wrote a book called All About Love. In one of her essays she teaches us that “The moment we choose to love, we begin to move towards freedom, to act in ways that liberate ourselves and others.”
Liberate means to set free, especially from harm that is not fair, kind, or just.
Dr. Cornel West teaches us that “Justice is what love looks like in public.”
For bell hooks & Dr. Cornel West, love is a way we can act, a way we can treat each other. Isn’t that beautiful… and powerful?
[EXPERIENCE & MEANING]
Let’s pause for a moment & take all of that in. Maybe even take a deep breath and hold in your imagination this word: love.
