“Justice”
INTRO
Hi! My name is Catherine Petru, but you can call me Cat, and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.
Here, we get to explore words — what they sound like, where they come from, how they make us feel, and how they illuminate our world - illuminate, what a beautiful word!
Words are like little portals - they give us clues about the cultures that surround us.
I’m so excited to be on this adventure with you. I can’t wait to find out what we’ll learn together.
TODAY’S WORD
Today’s word is “justice.” Can you say that? Let’s sound it out!
What do you think justice means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word justice?
DISCUSSION
We’ll probably use this word a lot together in future episodes of this podcast. So let’s dive a little deeper.
There are so many amazing kinds of justice! Can you name a few?
There’s climate justice, racial justice, gender justice, transformative justice, and so much more.
EXPERIENCE & MEANING
When I hear the word justice, I think of actions and group agreements that are fair, and that treat all of us – all of life – with amazing care and respect.
If you listened to our episode about love, you might remember that a great teacher named Dr. Cornel West says that “Justice is what love looks like in public.”
You may have also heard of a wonderful civil rights leader named Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He said that:
Dr. King: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
Injustice is the opposite of justice. It is when our actions and group agreements are unfair and harmful. What examples of justice and injustice do you notice in the world around you?
These are some big ideas. If you’d like, you can pause the show here and take some time to think about what Dr. West and Dr. King are talking about. You might even want to talk about your ideas with a trusted friend or grown up.
