SIO, Ep 10
“Generosity”
[INTRO]
Hi! My name is Catherine Petru, but you can call me Cat, and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.
Here, we get to explore words — what they sound like, where they come from, how they make us feel, and how they illuminate our world - illuminate, what a beautiful word!
Words are like little portals - they give us clues about the cultures that surround us.
I’m so excited to be on this adventure with you. I can’t wait to find out what we’ll learn together.
[TODAY’S WORD]
Today’s word is “generosity.”
What do you think generosity means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word generosity?
[DISCUSSION]
Looking back to the roots of this word was funny to me! I discovered a word I don’t think I’ve ever used: “magnanimous.” Apparently, “generosity” comes from the word magnanimous. While there was a lot to learn looking up both these words, the definition of generosity that really stood out to me is simply “not mean.”
[EXPERIENCE & MEANING]
Let’s think of some examples of generosity.
Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass, writes a lot about generosity. A writer and gardener, she says that when she harvests bushels and bushels of berries, instead of keeping them all to herself, she makes sure everyone in her community is fed. I love this example of generosity.
Generosity often looks like sharing. There is so much we can share: from food, clothes, and toys, to our ideas, time, energy, and love. How do you think your siblings or friends feel when you share with them? How do you feel when they share with you?
We can be generous with each other, and with ourselves, to support all of us having everything we need. If you think about it, there is enough food, water, and energy on planet Earth to take care of all of us, isn’t there? We just have to share.
