“Feminism”

[INTRO]

Hi! This is Cat Petru and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.

[TODAY’S WORD]

Today’s word is “feminism.”

What do you think feminism means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word feminism?

[DISCUSSION]

Feminism is a movement of people trying to create a world where humans of all genders and sexes - especially women, trans women, and gender diverse people - are treated with true dignity, respect, and love.

You can listen to our Sound It Out episode on “Gender” to learn more about some of these words.

When I hear the word feminism I think of people like Angela Davis, bell hooks, Laverne Cox, Dr. Vandana Shiva, Audre Lorde, and so many other incredible teachers who remind us that feminism is about gender equality and more… It is about making sure that none of us are harmed based on any part of our identity.

Feminism is about understanding that all life is precious, and putting that understanding into action.

[EXPERIENCE & MEANING]

One famous feminist saying I learned from one of my teachers Anjali Nath Upadhyay is that “the personal is political.” What do you think that means?

I think it means our thoughts, our feelings, our relationships, how we dress, how much money we have, what we eat - everything in our personal lives - is affected by the politics, laws, and social norms around us. (Remember that word, normal?)

Feminism teaches us to pay attention to how our personal lives and the public world interract. Feminism has taught me so much! And I know there is so much more to explore…
