“Ecology”

[INTRO]

Hi! I’m Cat Petru, and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.

[MUSIC TRANSITION]

Today’s word is “ecology.”

What do you think ecology means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word ecology?

[DISCUSSION]

Eco comes from the Greek word oikos, which means home. And logy, also Greek, means study of. So eco-logy is the study of home.

[EXPERIENCE & MEANING]

Have you heard the word ecology used before? When I hear it, it’s usually in conversations about water, land, animals, plants, humans, and how our lives impact each other.

Sometimes, we hear words like nature or habitat or ecology, and think those things only exist out in a forest or along a river, in some place where human life hasn’t taken up so much space.

But, I think it really depends on how we define “home.” We might be talking about a small meadow, home to wild grasses, grasshoppers, small birds, maybe snakes. And we can explore the ecology of that meadow - study how that meadow is a home.

Or we can look at the community, town, or city in which we live. How is this place home? Who and what lives here? How do our lives impact each other?

We can also think of the entire planet as home, full of millions of species on land, in water, in the air, tucked away in cozy burrows, gathering twigs for nests in high treetops, listening to podcasts with friends or grownups in classrooms or around kitchen tables...

What does home mean to you? How might you study the place or places you call home? How do we take care of these places?
