“Curiosity”

[INTRO]

Hi! My name is Catherine Petru, but you can call me Cat, and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.

Here, we get to explore words — what they sound like, where they come from, how they make us feel, and how they illuminate our world - illuminate, what a beautiful word!

Words are like little portals - they give us clues about the cultures that surround us.

I’m so excited to be on this adventure with you. I can’t wait to find out what we’ll learn together.

[TODAY’S WORD]

Today’s word is “curiosity.” Can you say that? Let’s sound it out!

What do you think curiosity means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word curiosity?

[DISCUSSION]

You might notice that a lot of English words have Latin roots. Latin is a very old language that arose along the Tiber River in what is now Italy! The Latin language spread far and wide, in part because of the political power of the Roman Empire. And it influences languages spoken today, including English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian.

[EXPERIENCE & MEANING]

So, in the case of curiosity, the Latin root is “cura” which means care! Curiosity is when you care so much you want to learn more.

Maybe you’ve heard the expression “Curiosity killed the cat”? But doesn’t that seem kind of silly? Caring so much that you want to learn shouldn’t be deadly!

Let’s pause for a moment. What is something you really care about? Something you might want to learn more about?

Maybe even take a deep breath in and out. Our curiosity can come from a bubbling of inspiration inside, and it can also be sparked by what we encounter in the world - like a ladybug, shooting star, political protest… and so much more.

If you want, you can pause the show here and share what you are curious about with a trusted friend or grown up, or write it down!
