“Courage”

[INTRO]

Hi! My name is Catherine Petru, but you can call me Cat, and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.

Here, we get to explore words — what they sound like, where they come from, how they make us feel, and how they illuminate our world - illuminate, what a beautiful word!

Words are like little portals - they give us clues about the cultures that surround us.

I’m so excited to be on this adventure with you. I can’t wait to find out what we’ll learn together.

[TODAY’S WORD]

Today’s word is “courage” - cur-rage - can you say that? Let’s sound it out!

What do you think courage means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word courage?

[DISCUSSION]

The root of the word courage comes from the Latin word “cor”, which means “heart.” You also hear this in the French word “coeur” and the Spanish word “corazon.”

Do you hear how “cor” is in all of these words?

[EXPERIENCE & MEANING]

If you feel comfortable, place your hand on your heart. What do you notice?

Maybe you feel your heartbeat.

To have courage is to be brave. Can you think of a time you felt brave?

What memories arise? How does your heart feel now?

If you want, you can pause the show here and share what you notice with a trusted friend or grown up.

To me, courage sometimes means feeling afraid to do something, but doing it anyway. Sometimes when we say or do something that scares us, that’s how we grow.
