SIO, Ep 07
“Community”
[INTRO]
Hi! My name is Catherine Petru, but you can call me Cat, and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.
[TODAY’S WORD]
Today’s word is “community.” Can you say that? Let’s sound it out!
What do you think community means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word community?
[DISCUSSION]
When I hear the word community, if I close my eyes, and take a deep breath, I can smell flowers in the sunshine. I hear laughter. I see people cooking and sharing food. For some reason there is a river or even a well nearby.
Maybe this is because community comes from the word common - but this isn’t common like ordinary! Common or commons is an old (you guessed it) Latin word that refers to a gathering place for all people. You don’t need to be rich or famous or fancy or have a certain job. All are welcome at the commons, and everyone knows the commons is where you go when you want to connect with others.
[EXPERIENCE & MEANING]
But, right now, it can be really hard to gather together.
What are some creative ways you are connecting with your community?
Who is part of your community?
And when we feel like we don’t have community - which happens to all of us, I promise - how can we reach out and find one another, and grow and nourish our communities?
I would love to hear your creative ideas! Stay tuned for an email address where you can write to me and connect! Even that can be a small act of community-building.
One thing I’ve noticed is that since the pandemic started (pandemic is a big word! We’ll get to that one, promise) I’ve been dreaming of community A LOT. My family and friends, even my grandmothers who are no longer with us, are all there, finding a way to live together in my dreams. And do you know what, it does help, even if only a little.
