“Collaborate”
[INTRO]
Hi! My name is Cat Petru, and you’re listening to Sound It Out: A Kids Podcast About Words.
[TODAY’S WORD]
Today’s word is “collaborate.”
What do you think collaborate means? What images or feelings arise when you hear the word collaborate?
[DISCUSSION]
When I hear this word, I think about eating… let me explain.
I don’t know about you, but I love to eat. One of my favorite things is being home with my family, cooking together. Now, I know if my parents are listening, they’re gonna start laughing because growing up, I didn’t really help much in the kitchen. But now, when I go home to visit, I love sitting at the kitchen counter, slicing veggies, while my dad chops garlic, and mom grinds spices. Often, my siblings, or other friends, are there. There is always music - blasting if my dad has it his way. And when everything is ready, we all sit down to eat.
I love this experience because we all work together to make the meal. We collaborate.
Collaborate has two roots - co and labor. Like con in con-sent, co means with or together. And maybe you’ve heard the word labor before. It means work. So co-llaborate means work together, usually to create something.
[EXPERIENCE & MEANING]
Back in the kitchen, my family and I aren’t the only ones collaborating on the meal! Somebody grew the food, which was nourished by nutrients and organisms in the soil, the light of the sun, and water.
And music, as I said, is always a key ingredient in our meal prep, so you could say the artist is a collaborator as well!
What sorts of creations do you collaborate on?
Who do you collaborate with?
Maybe you partner up with a friend or group to do your homework. Or play on a soccer or basketball team. Or sing in a choir. Or make art with a babysitter. These are all forms of collaboration.
